John Hannaway (Joseph, Sadie and Patrick’s dad) is taking part in the Art O’Neill challenge hike on Friday 13th January 2012 in Dublin.
This challenge follows the route that Red Hugh O’Donnell and Art O’Neill took following their escape from Dublin Castle to the Glenmalure valley in the Wicklow Mountains in January 1592. Sadly Both Art and Red Hugh perished on the mountain.
The hike is 55k and starts as they did at midnight and finishes at the spot where it is believed Art and his companion died. The route breakdown includes:
- 25k road walk to Kippure House
- 3k over Ballinabrocky
- 5k road walk to Ballynultagh Gap
- 18k hill walk to Table Track
- 4k track walk to Barravore
The likely walking time is 14 hours of which 8 are in darkness but the end is rewarded with several pints of Guinness.
John is asking for your sponsorship support with all monies to be equally split between the St Johns PTA and the Fiona Foundation.
